Allen Calls for More Oil Production

May 31, 2001

As cars and trucks whizzed by on Midlothian Turnpike, U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va., urged support of the Republicans' energy plan that calls for less reliance of foreign oil and more domestic oil production.

Allen spoke to reporters at a Rennie's service station at the corner of Courthouse Road and Midlothian Turnpike. He said he supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But he acknowledged the proposal stands little chance of clearing Congress.

"The crisis has not come overnight," he said of the nation's energy problems. "We need to take action. Demand for energy is at an all-time high."
