S.C. wildfire contained
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) The wildfire that burned nearly 30 square miles near the South Carolina coast is now 100% contained.
Scott Hawkins of the South Carolina Forestry Commission said Tuesday some crews will stay in the area for several weeks to continue mopping up burned areas and reinforcing fire breaks.
Most of the major roads closed earlier Tuesday because of smoke and fog have reopened. Horry County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier says US Highway 17 and state highways 22 and 90 are now open. Part of state Highway 31 remained closed Tuesday.
There has been help from the weather, with more humidity and a chance of rain later in the week.
The blaze started near Conway last Wednesday and destroyed 70 homes. There were no injuries.
