If enough taxes are not collected to cover the cost of unsolved common problems then problems will become uncommonly unsolvable. Common problems are the problems that people share in common which an individual cannot solve by themselves. Complicating the issue of insufficient tax collection is misspending of tax on non-common, private problems that are economic privilegs legislate by the public law process. For every tax dollar misspent, either another tax dollar is needed or a common problem goes unsolved with an on-going waste of people's time. Either we tax our worktime income to solve our common problems or those unsolved time-wasting problems will continue to take our work and play time. Optimal tax collection and tax spending leads to a problem-freer life which is a duty of politicians: When politicians make good policies then the polity in the polis will be polite without police. When they fail then one should recognize that in times of worsening habitual problems the only thing worse than not voting is voting for a habitual politician.
People do stupid things. One of the most stupid things is how the rich with the most to lose if the economic and political system collapses due to insufficient tax collection are the very people who seek to legally avoid paying taxes by buying the corruptible habitual politicians with campaign bribes. Silly. Stupid.
With modern telecommunication, we could have a fair and realtime tax system that lowers the cost of taxing while improving tax collection. Tax rates could be individualized like ATM-fees.
CO2 sinning tax must not be forgotten.
Please note that all these taxes have in common the direct or indirect taking of time which restates the old question of who should be taxed with a guideline: For the comon good, stability and security, whose times should be taken?
